Cyber Security

Application Area

As the world around us becomes increasingly connected, digital systems now form the backbone of modern society—powering everything from healthcare and energy infrastructure to transportation, finance, and manufacturing. With this reliance comes an urgent need for these systems to be secure, resilient, and trustworthy.

Cyber threats are evolving at an unprecedented pace, exploiting vulnerabilities in complex, interconnected systems. As digital systems become more autonomous, data-driven, and distributed—particularly with the rise of digital twins, edge computing, AI, and IoT—so too does the attack surface. The consequences of system failures due to attacks are no longer just technical—they impact safety, privacy, economy, and public trust.

In this context, Cyber-Secure Digital Systems are not just a technical necessity, but a societal imperative

Nimbus aims to anticipate, understand, and mitigate cyber risks in digital systems through a multidisciplinary approach, requiring advances in systems engineering, cryptography, human factors, policy, and emerging technology domains.

Research areas include

  • Security by Design: embedding security principles early in the system lifecycle and secure architectures.
  • Identity, Trust & Access Management in Federated Ecosystems:  Privacy-preserving identity models and secure data sharing across organisational boundaries
  • Cyber Resilience & Adaptive Security: AI-driven threat detection and response with self-healing systems and automated incident response
  • Security for Embedded, Edge & IoT Systems:  Lightweight cryptography and secure communications and hardware security and secure firmware updates
  • Human-Centric and Ethical Security: Usable security and privacy design and ethics of autonomous and AI-powered systems
  • Secure Data, AI & Autonomy: Data provenance and integrity in data-driven systems, Secure and explainable AI models; Adversarial robustness and model tampering prevention
