Smart Manufacturing

Application Area

Smart Manufacturing represents a transformative shift in how products are designed, produced, and maintained—driven by the convergence of digital technologies, automation, and data intelligence. By embedding connectivity, sensing, and AI across the production lifecycle, manufacturers can achieve unprecedented levels of efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability.

This domain is central to achieving resilient supply chains, reducing environmental impact, and enabling highly customised, on-demand production models that support both economic growth and climate goals.

Industry 5.0 represents the next evolution of industrial transformation—moving beyond automation and efficiency to place greater emphasis on human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. It envisions a future where humans and machines work collaboratively, combining the precision of advanced technologies like AI, robotics, and digital twins with human creativity and problem-solving. Industry 5.0 aims to create value not only for businesses, but also for society and the environment, aligning innovation with ethical, social, and ecological priorities.

Nimbus research aims to shape a future where manufacturing is not only smart but also sustainable, secure, and human-centric. Through interdisciplinary research and strong industry collaboration, we support the transition to agile, resilient production systems that can adapt to shifting demands through advancing digital and green innovation. Key areas of focus include:

  • Data modelling, integration and sharing: from sensors, machines, and enterprise systems, providing robust data collection for insight generation. Enabling secure data sharing across business units and organisations.
  • Data and AI-Driven Process Optimisation: Real-time analytics and decision-making across complex manufacturing processes
  • Industrial Digital Twins: Twin models of assets, systems, and processes for simulation and optimisation. Contextualised visualisation for improved decision making.
  • Human-Centric Automation: Collaborative robotics (cobots) and safe human-machine interaction including augmented reality (AR) and digital interfaces for operator support
  • Sustainable Manufacturing Systems: Energy-efficient production scheduling and machine operation; Circular economy models enabled by real-time material tracking
  • Cybersecurity for Smart Factories: Protection of connected machinery and operational technologies (OT); Secure data exchange across supply chain ecosystems
