Project Summary

Trust in technology refers to the confidence that users, organisations, and societies place in digital systems to function securely, reliably, and ethically. It involves transparency, accountability, & assurance that technology, whether AI, cloud computing, or IoT within digital ecosystems, operates as intended, respects privacy, & safeguards data. Trust is built through strong security, data management, regulatory compliance, ethical design, & user empowerment, ensuring that technology aligns with human values and societal expectations. Without trust, adoption slows, risks increase, & the benefits of digital innovation are undermined. For example, regulatory barriers & governance gaps in sectors like healthcare (an inTRUSTED pilot) hinder technology adoption, raising data privacy & security concerns. Existing approaches often prioritise technical security measures in isolation, overlooking socio-ethical factors, which erodes trust & slows digital solution uptake in care settings. inTRUSTED’s research program (figure below) & methodology draws from the concept of a Living Lab, which is a real-world innovation ecosystem that uses co-creation to integrate research & development, engage communities & stakeholders while placing end-users at the center of the process.[1] By integrating technical innovations, compliance, co-creation, participatory design, creative practices & iterative experimentation, inTRUSTED aims to foster an environment where innovation aligns with the genuine needs & values of people, creating trusted, sustainable, & inclusive digital ecosystems. This aligns with Horizon Europe’s Destination 6 objective of building trustworthy & human-centric digital ecosystems. Existing research often focuses on isolated technical solutions without real-world validation or interdisciplinary integration. Holistic, evidence-based approaches that combine technology, policy, & user perspectives to qualify, measure & enhance trust in digital ecosystems are needed. inTRUSTED supports 5 interrelated post doc (PD) projects (including pilot studies), ensuring a multi-perspective, interdisciplinary approach to solving trust related challenges in collaborative digital ecosystems. The five PDs will work interdependently. The 5 PD projects (PD1-PD5) are interwoven to build trust in digital ecosystems by addressing security, governance, human-centred design, compliance, & creative engagement in a holistic, interconnected way & will foster collaboration between researchers, industry, policymakers, & users, creating real-world, actionable outcomes.   [1] European Network of Living Labs https://enoll.org/living-labs/#living-labs

Our Role

The inTRUSTED partnership (see figure) represents collaboration across & between STEM & AHSS disciplines, 4 Faculties (Engineering, Science & Informatics, Creative Performing Arts & Media, Health & Social Sciences), 4 Departments (Computer Science, Fine Art & Applied Art, Media Communications, Applied Social Studies), 1 Research Centre (Nimbus) & 1 Research Group (Cyber Explore) & 8 Research Leaders, who individually collaborate (projects, grant writing, PhD supervision) Individually the research leaders manage their own teams & research activities. These partnerships are evidence of a track record of success, shared resources, & a rich interdisciplinary research environment. The inTRUSTED Living Lab provides an opportunity to expand & accelerate this interdisciplinary research/capacity at scale within MTU. An integrated STEM & AHSS approach is essential for addressing trusted collaborative digital ecosystems in the Living Lab, as it combines technical innovation with critical social, ethical, & regulatory insights. Project Themes:
  • Dataspheres4Trust will develop a composable toolkit integrating zero-trust principles, compliance assessment, standardised policy definitions, & distributed enforcement using emerging standards & Distributed Ledger Technology for data governance. This solution will enable adaptive policy management across edge-cloud data spaces, ensuring secure, interoperable, & self-sovereign data ecosystems.
  • Resilience4Trust will develop a hybrid cyber range CDT solution that integrates virtualised & physical hardware, enhancing system response analysis to cyber threats. It will model both device- & system-level resilience, incorporate advanced cyber-attack scenarios, & leverage AI driven critical process analysis to improve cyber resilience & security in federated networks.
  • Assurance4Trust will develop automated compliance & verification tools in a Living Lab setting, simulating real-world challenges. A Regulatory Compliance Assessment Dashboard will be created, investigating the value of using cybersecurity digital twins, distributed ledger, & AI/ML to enhance industry best practice for data governance & supply chain regulatory compliance.
  • Design4Trust bridges technical rigor with stakeholder engagement by combining co-creation, participatory design, & iterative experimentation to develop trust solutions grounded in user needs & societal challenges. This holistic approach positions federated ecosystems to overcome adoption barriers through solutions that balance innovation, compliance, societal values, & the fundamental values of care, dignity & inclusivity
  • Perspectives4Trust addresses these through artist-led methodologies examining trust dynamics via embodied artistic practices, through workshops & installations that will map embodied distrust through tactile art, prototype resilient systems that value human variability over pure efficiency & develop metrics transforming creative outputs into evaluative tools. By integrating practice-based insights into conceptual models, this work advances theoretical frameworks of trust in technology while bridging humanistic critique & technical implementation offering scalable models for ethical innovation within digital ecosystem.
