Project Summary

The InSecTT (Intelligent Secure Trustable Things, 2020 – 2023) project aimed to bring together Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) and merge them into a vision of Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT). The creation of trust in AI-based intelligent systems was considered a major part of the AIoT solutions developed in InSecTT.

Our Role

Nimbus was one of four Irish partners involved in this project, the others being Klas, UCC and Liebherr Container Cranes. Nimbus and Klas contributed to the use case “Intelligent Transportation for Smart Cities”, which was led by the Spanish partner Indra, a large industrial player in the railway domain. The use case proposed Smart Transportation systems that interconnect rail and road users in Smart City environments and provide solutions for intelligent transportation and traffic management to improve links between different modes of transportation, thereby addressing the traffic challenges of large modern cities. Vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication is an integral part of such systems, and it must be efficient and reliable.  Nimbus worked on methods and algorithms to manage V2I communication, using AI to assess link quality and dynamically manage and choose the most suitable connections in real time among a variety of interfaces, including 5G and other technologies. AI-enhanced connection management methods and algorithms developed by Nimbus were implemented and tested on Klas hardware systems, thereby providing enhanced functionality and added value to these systems. Those systems were then integrated into the overall architecture developed within this use case.

Collaborators

Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH, Austria (Coordinator); Klas (Irish industry partner); 50 other European partners.
